Meet Dixie Smith, a 7-year-old mixed dog with a heart as big as her personality. Once an energetic, playful dog who loved to run and fetch, Dixie’s life took a sudden turn in July 2025 when she began experiencing weakness in her back legs.
What started as a limp quickly progressed – within just a few days, Dixie was unable to use her hind legs at all. Her family was devastated but determined to help her recover.
A Sudden Change
On July 18th, Dixie was taken to an animal hospital after her owners noticed her limping. By July 20th, her condition worsened to full paralysis in her hind limbs. An X-ray taken a few days later revealed multiple areas of spondylosis deformans and narrowing in her spine – consistent with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition where the discs between the vertebrae degenerate or herniate, pressing painfully on the spinal cord.
Dixie’s family chose to pursue conservative treatment – a structured, non-surgical rehabilitation plan designed to help her regain strength and mobility.
The Beginning of Rehab
When Dixie first arrived at Rehab 4 PAWS & Integrative on July 28th, she couldn’t move her hind legs on her own. Her reflexes were weak, and only a few toes still had deep pain sensation – one of the most important indicators for potential recovery.
Despite everything, Dixie remained calm, gentle, and eager to try. Together with her dedicated family, we began building a customized rehabilitation plan including:
- Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS): to help prevent muscle atrophy and promote circulation
- Laser Therapy: to reduce pain and inflammation along her spine
- Gentle Range of Motion & Massage Exercises: to maintain flexibility and comfort
- At-Home Exercises: to continue progress between sessions
Her family committed fully – bringing her in twice a week and practicing exercises at home every day.
Small Steps, Big Hope
By August 7th, Dixie added acupuncture to her treatment plan. While movement hadn’t returned yet, she was relaxed, responsive and improving in comfort.
Just two weeks later, during her August 18th re-evaluation, her owners noticed something incredible – Dixie’s right hind leg was starting to move! During her session, we saw it too: small but clear attempts to bend and push. Her reflexes were stronger, her spirits brighter and her determination unshakable.
We introduced underwater treadmill therapy to help rebuild her muscle strength and coordination. The buoyancy of the water reduced strain on her spine while encouraging her to move her legs naturally. At first, we assisted her movements, but soon, Dixie began walking more confidently with each session!
Her Turning Point
By the end of August, Dixie had made extraordinary progress:
- 8/26: Stood up on her own in the backyard and took a few steps.
- 8/27: Walked around the park with her owner!
- 9/02: Could walk independently with minimal harness support.
- 9/04: Walking, sitting, and standing completely on her own.
Each visit brought more smiles and wagging tails – and fewer signs of fear or frustration. Dixie was getting her life back, one step at a time.
A Triumphant Recovery
After three months of dedicated therapy – combining acupuncture, laser therapy, underwater treadmill, EMS, and home care – Dixie was back to walking and running freely. Her strength, balance and coordination returned almost completely.
If you look closely, you might still notice a hint of wobbliness in her step, but it doesn’t stop her from enjoying her walks at the park and playing like she used to. She remains under mild activity restrictions to protect her spine but she’s thriving – pain-free and happy.
A True Team Effort
Dixie’s journey is a reminder that recovery takes time, patience and teamwork. Her family’s dedication – combined with consistent therapy and her own fighting spirit – made all the difference.
We’re incredibly proud of Dixie and grateful to her amazing owners for their trust and commitment. Watching her regain her mobility and joy has been one of the most rewarding experiences for our team.
On behalf of the entire Rehab 4 PAWS & Integrative Therapy team, here’s to Dixie – a true inspiration for what hope, love and rehabilitation can achieve!
